First, get yourself a picnic table. We got this one at Home Depot for $100.
Sand the top and seats just enough to smooth out any rough spots and paint with exterior semi-gloss. We used leftover paint from our DIY Sandbox project.
You could just leave it this way, but you'll miss out on the fun part!
The majority of Bugs' family on his moms side, live out of state and several of them were coming to attend his 1st Birthday party which gave us the opportunity to make them a part of this project.
I gathered up: Acrylic craft paints in various colors, sponge tipped craft brushes and several paint pens in coordinating colors. Don't forget paper towels, a bag for trash and water to clean your hands.
Let the Fun Begin!
Use the paint pens to autograph and date your hand prints-most of us also wrote a little message to Bug and wished him Happy 1st Birthday. We had Aunts, Uncles, and even Great-Grandparents involved. Bug autographed his own hand prints with some artistic markings-I smile every time I see it.
Foot prints were added on the seating areas. One side for Mom and Bug and the other for Dad and Bug.
The table has added a wonderful element to the play area. On every visit outside Bug climbs onto the table and points to each and every hand as we name each family member.
I hope our project inspires you to create your own personalized picnic table. Please let me know if you do, I'd love to see it!
